Civility Training -- Is It Right for Your Company ?

It is important for employees to feel safe in the workplace. Individuals assimilate into an established sense of community when they are a part of a workplace.. In any environment where people are expected to interact with one another, misconduct is anticipated.After being assimilated into a work environment, co-workers may begin to get loosely acquainted with one another, often overstepping the boundaries of a professional work setting. While becoming notably casual, the lines of what may or may not be appropriate can easily blur. Luckily, there are civility trainings for employees. Human Resources MBA defines civility training as a “professional business training related to etiquette, diversity awareness and cultural sensitivity.” In short, employees learn to be exceptionally aware of how they interact with coworkers, in addition to superiors, in a standard professional manner. Having a universal standard of how one should conduct themselves in the workplace helps to avoid  blurred lines regarding  misunderstandings and tense interactions.. 

The introduction of civility training for employees shows that employers are being thoughtful and intentional about the overall well-being of their employees. Today’s workforce is more diverse, more activist, and is aware of the value that they bring to the workplace. All of these factors lead to employees having a very low tolerance for management not properly responding to misconduct within the workplace. Any act that can be perceived by employees as being rude, dismissive, and unprofessional can eventually lead to allegations of a toxic workplace. 

The best companies actually live up to their stated values and goals regarding the workplace that they are attempting to construct. Civility training helps employees to learn how best to interact with others, and also serves as a moral compass for employers in order to set behavioral expectations within the workplace.
